SUMMARY 1. The Roman Arena, with its cruel and bloody games, remains one of the greatest mysteries of the Ancient World. For over five hundred years, lethal gladiatorial contests, staged to entertain the Empires' privileged classes, dominated Roman society. Wild beast hunts, reconstructed battles fought with deadly weapons and mass executions of prisoners were an integral part of these increasingly lavish spectacles.
SUMMARY 2. But why was this spectacle of death so important to Roman society? Why did the Romans go to such lengths to construct special buildings in which to display these games, and how did these buildings work? And what was it like to be the star - a gladiator?.
SUMMARY 3. Colosseum is a landmark documentary that will answer these questions. Based on the story of Verus - a man known to have fought in the arena, it focuses on the true lives of the gladiators who lived and died for their cause. The film is set during the three-year period prior to the completion of the Colosseum, the largest Roman arena ever built. It climaxes with the inaugural games in 80 AD, which lasted over a hundred days.
SUMMARY 4. So successful were the games that the man who sponsored them,, Titus, went down as one of the most popular emperors in history.
